Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes over 74,000 acres of land and protects more than 1,250 historic structures, 27 of which are extremely rare. There are also many small “islands” of threatened habitat. NPS staff, volunteers, and partners work hard to care for the park’s treasures for the 20 million people who visit each year and for future generations. Windswept ridges, protected valleys and scenic beaches offer nature’s best.
Muir Woods
Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley, CA
Tel: (415) 388-1540
Located on Mt. Tamalpais in the southwestern area of Marin County, no trip to Northern California is complete without a visit to Muir Woods. Originally spared by loggers due to its inaccessibility, the forest has been federally protected since 1908. Often covered in marine fog that supports rigorous plant growth, Muir Woods is a peaceful refuge just miles from Sausalito. The ancient coast redwood forest sequoias span approximately 250 feet and range between 500 to 1,200 years old. Plan a day trip to explore this peaceful canyon grove and take in the silent, natural cathedral of redwoods.
